WHO's New Vaccine Safety Virtual Learning Ecosystem

Published on March 16, 2023

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a vaccine safety virtual learning ecosystem, consisting of four interactive, dynamic courses on vaccine safety.

Each course:

Has informative content and immersive scenarios
•Is engaging with effective instructional designs
Has branching scenarios that will fully immerse you in a game-based approach blended with traditional eLearning
Enables you to learn at your own pace, start and stop without losing progress
Obtains a certificate following successful completion.

The  following is a summary of each course:

  • Vaccine Safety Basics: This course introduces participants to the foundations of vaccine pharmacovigilance. The aim of this course is to provide healthcare professionals whose work involve vaccine safety issues, with essential knowledge about vaccines and their safety aspects. These professionals can include nurses, midwives, community health workers, as well as pharmacists, medical doctors and immunization programme or vaccine safety communication officers
  • AEFI (Adverse Event Following Immunization) Data Management Basics:
    • First, you visit the fictitious island country of Harmonia with its 6 provinces and several districts and understand the organizational structure of its health system and get introduced to the different human actors and their roles in the vaccine safety crisis that unfolds in the eLearning course. (Module 0)
    • Next, in response to the AEFI cluster of cases that occur in Harmonia, review the different aspects of an electronic AEFI data management system. You can practice data entry to get a “feel” of the process and identify the 3 common types of errors that can occur during data entry and understand their implications in real life situations (Module 1 AEFI data entry)
    • Finally, As program manager in Harmonia, you will learn how the data entered in the electronic AEFI data management system is converted to graphs, tables, and line lists, how the data are reviewed and monitored at the various levels and how key decisions are made. (Module 2 AEFI data analysis and decision making)
  • AEFI Investigation: WHO takes you on a journey to Africa, Europe and Asia where serious AEFI cases are reported, and you get an opportunity to: decide when to launch an AEFI investigation; list what information is required to successfully complete an AEFI Investigation Report Form and investigation dossier; and decide when, what and how may be best to communicate with involved parties during an investigation.
  • AEFI Causality Assessment: Using this stepwise story-based approach, explore the different facets and challenges of AEFI causality assessment and practice assessing causality for serious AEFI cases with step-by-step guidance explaining the logic of your  decisions; Ask your “difficult”  questions and get answers by interacting with an expert on a Chatbot; explore a plethora of resources that you can use in real life.
