29th Annual Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Ceremony

Published on November 11, 2022

The Sabin Vaccine Institute is thrilled to announce the recipients of the 29th Annual Albert B. Sabin awards. The 2022 Gold Medal awardee is Dr. Kathrin Jansen and the Rising Star is Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett.
Please join us in a virtual award ceremony as we celebrate the achievements of Dr. Jansen and Dr. Corbett at 5 pm ET on Wednesday, December 7. (Click here to convert to your local time.)

The Gold Medal is the Sabin Vaccine Institute’s highest scientific honor, presented annually since 1994 to a distinguished member of the global health community who has made extraordinary contributions to vaccinology or a complementary field. Dr. Jansen joins an esteemed group of previous recipients including vaccine scientists and champions such as Drs. Barney Graham, Carol Baker, Anne Gershon, Myron (Mike) Levine and Stanley Plotkin.

Dr. Jansen is receiving the Gold Medal in recognition of her leadership in advancing vaccines that prevent some of the world’s most common and harmful infectious diseases. Throughout her illustrious career as a vaccine research leader, she has played an outsized role in developing vaccines for a range of challenging diseases from COVID-19 to HPV and pneumonia, all of which afflict adults and children in low-and middle-income countries with already-fragile health care systems. She most recently served as the Senior Vice President and Head of Vaccine Research and Development at Pfizer and retired from that role in August.

The Sabin Rising Star Award honors an early-career professional who has demonstrated a commitment to the field of immunization and who exemplifies Sabin’s mission to make vaccines more accessible, enable innovation and expand immunization across the globe.

Dr. Corbett is being recognized as the Rising Star for her groundbreaking research at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases that was central to the development of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. We also honor her commitment to rebuilding trust with vaccine-hesitant populations and nurturing the next generation of scientists, especially in underserved communities in the United States. Dr. Corbett is currently an Assistant Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

While the pandemic is keeping our celebration virtual, we look forward to celebrating Drs. Jansen and Corbett — and having you join us as we shine the spotlight on two outstanding scientists for their lifesaving vaccine work.

Please register for the 2022 Sabin Gold Medal Ceremony. We hope to see you on December 7.
