JSI Strengthening Health Information Systems in Ethiopia: A Journey of Innovation and Collaboration
The Ethiopia Data Use Partnership (DUP), a JSI-led project funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, has significantly advanced Ethiopia’s health information system (HIS) over the past five years through the Capacity Building and Mentorship Program (CBMP). This initiative, celebrated for its innovative interventions and local engagement, has transformed 11 districts and 53 health facilities, trained over 4,164 health professionals, and established more than 80% of these facilities as model sites. By partnering with the Ministry of Health, regional health bureaus, and six universities, the program enhanced local capacity to independently plan and implement HIS initiatives. Universities like the University of Gondar and Jimma University emerged as centers of excellence, further supported by revised curricula and research contributions. This collaboration fostered sustainable outcomes, with the University of Gondar securing a Gates Foundation grant to continue the work, and the IT Internship Program deploying 169 interns nationwide, exemplifying the project's success in fostering local ownership and capacity.
