UN Report: Child Mortality Hits Record Low of 4.9 million in 2022

The latest report from the UN Interagency Group for Child Mortality Estimation brings encouraging news: the global under-five mortality rate has dropped by 51% since 2000. Remarkable efforts in countries like Cambodia, Malawi, Mongolia, and Rwanda have seen reductions exceeding 75%. UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell praised the dedication of midwives and health workers in achieving this progress. Yet, challenges persist, with millions of children still dying from preventable causes, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia. Factors like economic instability and the lingering effects of COVID-19 exacerbate these disparities. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the need for equitable access to healthcare, while Juan Pablo Uribe of the World Bank stressed the importance of investing in education and decent working conditions for health workers.
