Factors Associated with COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake and Hesitancy Among Healthcare Workers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Check out this study which looks at COVID-19 vaccine uptake among healthcare workers (HCWs) in seven provinces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and identified factors associated with vaccination. The findings revealed that 46.3% of HCWs had received at least one dose of the vaccine. Factors strongly associated with vaccination uptake included older age, being married, being a medical doctor, residing in rural areas, and having access to or prior experience working in COVID-19 vaccination sites. Motivations for vaccination among HCWs included protection of themselves, their families, and their communities. In contrast, concerns among unvaccinated HCWs centered on safety, effectiveness, and the risk of severe side effects. The study highlights a divide between vaccine-willing and vaccine-hesitant HCWs, suggesting the need for a multidimensional approach to increase vaccine acceptability. Future vaccine campaigns may benefit from messaging that emphasizes the positive impact of vaccination on protecting loved ones and communities, as well as addressing safety concerns to improve vaccine uptake among HCWs and the general population.
