Launch of WHO and UNICEF Infodemic Insights Manual
UNICEF recently announced a joint publication with WHO, titled How to build an infodemic insights report in six steps. This WHO/UNICEF manual represents the combined efforts, wisdom and expert inputs from many colleagues at regional and country level, and all that we have learned during the COVID-19 pandemic and other recent outbreaks and emergencies on how to develop evidence-based social listening and infodemic insights reports. This manual provides a step-by-step overview of how to develop an insights report for new infodemic managers and others assigned with infodemic management tasks.
Infodemic monitoring, analysis and reporting processes that are described in this manual can be applied to a large range of health and development related topics. It will be useful to those applying it to emergency preparedness and response, vaccine demand, pandemic influenza and respiratory pathogen event preparedness, as well as for other infectious disease programmes. The approach can also be adapted for analysis of questions, concerns, information voids and circulating narratives, mis and disinformation on any other topic and prioritization of actions based on programmatic and operational context – from sexual and reproductive health, nutrition to other development topics.
The manual is written for people just starting out in this field, who come from a public health or emergency response background, but might not have benefitted from intensive training or experience in infodemic management. The manual is accompanied by a workbook, fillable worksheet templates, and annexes on advanced topics that cover the most frequently requested resources and questions. In addition, UNICEF has developed training modules for virtual and in-person delivery, designed for lo-fi environments, which will be piloted over several iterations in countries and different settings.
