
USAID MOMENTUM: Against All Odds- How Community Health Workers Protect Children from Polio in the DRC
In the Ruashi Health Zone of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, community health volunteers like Nathalie and Kathy are transforming lives by addressing barriers to vaccination and combating preventable diseases such as polio. Despite challenges like geographic isolation, limited infrastructure, and vaccine hesitancy, their dedication—supported by USAID’s MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity Project—has connected thousands of zero-dose and under-vaccinated children to health services. By educating families, conducting home visits, and enhancing surveillance systems for conditions like acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), these volunteers are bridging healthcare gaps, improving immunization rates, and fostering healthier futures for children in underserved communities.
